In the final verse of the album version of "Sulky Girl," I love the way he spits out the line, "Your money's no good in here!"

not fish and chip paper

I dredge up this old thread because I have three observations about correspondence on paper. 1. My mother and father met just a short time before his employer sent him overseas for an indefinite period that ended up being almost two years. Each of them had survived a failed marriage, and each was so...

Big Suit memories

A lot of time has elapsed since Father's Day (or is it Fathers' Day?), but I'm just catching up on these posts now. So how did you like the SMS DVD, noise? I'm especialy fond of some of the bonuses. "Big Business"/"I Zimbra" is very fine!

book shopping this weekend I think

Picked up Carl Hiaasen's, "Basket Case" for the plane ride home. It's proving to be a quick read, but he loses credibility early on having the fictitous band The Slut Puppies winning a Grammy. C'mon !! With Hiaasen, you have to suspend disbelief, and in my estimation you will be amply rew...

I laughed and laughed at the Folksmen

Isn't it funny that Spinal Tap grew up and became the Folksmen? Actually, given the respective timeframes, what happened is that The Folksmen got younger, grew hair and morphed into Spinal Tap. Oh, and I expect Derek Smalls somehow got his penis back in the process.

Yes, I could too call it unexpected!

What! He did "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away"???? It appears from the shows and setlists I've seen so far that "Brilliant Mistake" (a/k/a "King of America" - I know I know, nitpicking a favourable review is unkind) and "Shot with His Own Gun" only make appe...

AND "Brilliant Mistake"?!?!?!?!?!?!

What a wonderful show that sounds like indeed. "Shot with His Own Gun" is not only a "strange, grand, Kurt Weill-like song," but when sung in a "voice dropped to a cracked whisper," I'll bet it was awesome. Those of you who don't know Trust yet are in for a real treat!

and I haven't even mentioned "Lip Service"

That's one of the few negatives of producing a masterpiece like TYM: absolutely wonderful songs like "The Beat" get short shrift just because they're not "Pump It Up" or "Lipstick Vogue." "Little Triggers," "The Beat," "(IDWtGt) Chelsea," o...

"Either Side. . . ." is great song! I hope we get an EC version of it someday, maybe on one of the many live albums that are in our future.

great article - thanks mr. jfoyle!

Costello has breathed renewed life into older songs, whether it's an acoustic version of the early Little Triggers or especially the 1986 betrayal ballad, I Want You, which has become increasingly frightening and paranoid in each performance. I've heard the latter, but where the hell's my acoustic ...

but the new "Pump It Up" arrangement kinda sucked

stormwarning: I think Help Me is the old Sonny Boy Williamson song. Elvis used to tag this onto Detectives in '82/83....if my memory serves me well.
It was indeed the SBW song: "Help me now, I can't do it all by myself!"

at least "Party Party" was on the album Party Part

Actually, there was no such thing as a "bonus track" when "Imperial Bedroom" (the song) was released. It was the B-side of a single, and when I say single, I mean a 45-rpm record, not a CDEP. Long before it became a bonus track, it showed up on the Out of Our Idiot collection.
