I'm reading Krugman's Peddling Prosperity now, which is a fascinating read, if a little dry. It was published in 1994 and details the rise of monetarism and the distortion of that theory that came to be called supply-side economics. If you want to know how we got started down the road that led to th...

. . . . Before that was Lawrence Block`s Small Town ( another easy read if a little disconcerting - there was just too much sex in it !) That's quite surprising, and I don't mean the phrase "too much sex" (which doesn't really compute, now that I think of it). I'm a big fan of Block's. In...

I'm paranoid too, to some extent. I just don't go looking for conspiracies that are completely outlandish. The ones I'm sure about are scary enough, thank you very much. The subversion of our democracy doesn't have to happen with flashy events like mass murder and the imposition of martial law. It c...

I don't have much Zappa, but I think Tim(e)'s onto something with those recommendations. One I've always been partial to is Waka/Jawaka, which is a transitional "fusion jazz" album from 1972, between the styles of Hot Rats and Zoot Allures.

it's an illness I know, but . . . .

Some of you may have noticed that I have a fondness for cover versions, for reasons unknown. Yes, there's some validity to the view that many classic recordings simply can't be improved upon, so why try? But on the other hand, if a recording artist has a real fondness for a great song and the vision...

Jet fuel burns very quickly, in an explosive burst. Maybe so, out in the open. But enclose it and feed in oxygen only through the hole the plane just made penetrating the building, and you will have a very hot fire of considerable duration, even without all the other flammables, like drywall, carpe...

I can't say exactly which tours we're talking about - it was perhaps three times in the late '70s to early '80s. It seemed to me that Ray and Dave weren't getting along, or at least were working at cross-purposes up there. It was highly unprofessional, it seemed to me, to be working out your sibling...

I'm not that much of a Kinks fan, because they were a godawful band live. At leat they never impressed me the few times I happened to see them. However, that's not the point of my post. I just want people to learn the two main guys' last name. It's my understanding that Brits pronounce Ray and Dave'...
