Re: going back to s.p. and s.

I don't hear much of S.P. and S in NR. Not a fan of that record, and a I'm loving NR, so no link really. It's almost the anti-SPS to me, but that's just me. But, Jardine, I would go back one more record to find the record NR reminds me of: Momofuku. Harry Worth, Mr. Feathers and My Three Sons fit in...

Re: Do you have a prized or favorite lyric?

Each night I leave the bar room when it's over Not feeling any pain at closing time But tonight your memory found me much too sober Couldn't drink enough to keep you off my mind Tonight the bottle let me down And let your memory come around The one true friend I thought I'd found Tonight the bottle ...

Re: Do you have a prized or favorite lyric?

Re: Elvis profiled in Nov 8 2010 issue of The New Yorker

Christoper, I don't think we are talking Jessel here!! I think his participation in tributes and the like has been pretty classily done. You think he's in danger of becoming a caricature? I do think that he's adopting a Dylan pose these days, and that's not a bad thing.

Re: Elvis profiled in Nov 8 2010 issue of The New Yorker

I like this article. First things first, though. The fact that EC finally got a New Yorker feature is a biggie. Unless I missed it, this is in fact the first. Even though the New Yorker is not what it used to be, there is still a certain level of prestige attached to it, and as a fan I kind of like ...

Re: Do you have a prized or favorite lyric?

Agreed, Verbal. I think that's a great pop song, and a great line. In the same vein, how about "shake it like a Polaroid picture" from that rap song. And that song that EC covered in Kojak, with the line about "pickles". But speaking of rap, I think it's time we expanded our lyri...

Re: Wake up you footy fans!!!

The article below is a prime example of how the game is catching on over here. More on Rooney and the gang. Question for the group: why is the salary referenced in terms of weeks? Do they get paid for weeks played? http://goal.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/10/22/does-rooney-deal-undermine-uniteds-ability-t...

Re: Do you have a prized or favorite lyric?

Christopher, I love that PS song. Check out the Annie Lennox version. Only one line that bothers me, and it's that motion line. Stilted, but hey who am I to critique PS. I think PS is one of those songwriters we've sort of gotten used to over the years, so much so that he's actually taken for grante...

Yeah, Keif is a neighbor. Well, he lives in the same town, but definetely toward the ritzier side. But he hangs. Sent his girls to the public school in town (Mick's kids were in Swiss boarding schools). My next door neighbor's boy was in class with one of them, and would visit Keif's house. Keif was...

Re: Wake up you footy fans!!!

This is what I don't understand about this Rooney thing. And I may be wrong in a big way , since I am new to this game, having started watching the games only a couple of years ago. My first introduction to ManU was the team that had Rudd something or other as the main goal scorer, with the red head...

Here are some snippets from the letters: “The report is that he [Joyce] and his family are starving but you can find the whole Celtic crew of them every night in Michaud’s where Binnie and I can only afford to go about once a week.” On New York: “There are some fine buildings. New ones. Not any with...

You are right, Mood, Sun Valley was Hem's private Idaho, not Wyoming. Silly me. Don't get out to those parts much.

Haven’t posted here in a while. Looks like CS is single-handedly keeping the thread alive. Been reading lots of Elmore Leonard stuff. Every book a gem. Also a Louis Armstrong biography. Not the Giddins one, but by a guy with a funny name, Teachout. NO. Music, pot, and suppositories= genius or someth...

CWR, I am a big fan of JWH and I had the same impression you did. On first listening, JWH came to mind. Don't know exactly why. Maybe the hushed tone of a lot of the songs on the record bring up the similarity in the voice. Can you say "gangsta folk"? I’ve been listening to Ransom for a fe...

Re: Do you have a prized or favorite lyric?

Nice job on Moz/byrne. Can't say I disagree with any of it. After all these years, whatever criticism can be lobbed at these two is more than overcome by all the fun music and memories. Wished I had seen TH live. Never did. On the other hand, my one and only Smiths show remains one of the most memor...

Re: Do you have a prized or favorite lyric?

Hey, Otis, how've you been? haven't chatted in a while. The line I was thinking of was "she has a face with a view". That was an allusion to his photographer girl friend. This was eons ago, but for some reason I recall that being brought up in some ancient interview. Have always been a big...

Re: Do you have a prized or favorite lyric?

On adge's comment about the inane, Steve Allen, a sometimes inane but sometimes brilliant, US comedian/talk show host/sometimes songwriter, used to riff on the inanity of Beatles lyrics (back in the late 60s when Beatles lyrics were talked about in hushed tones), and would use She Loves You as his m...

Re: Do you have a prized or favorite lyric?

Christopher, love the YouTube performance. Much better than the original. The original, done during his original folkie phase, pales in comparison to this version, even though his croaky voice gets in the way in spots (when he sings or croaks or whines “farewell” you sort of have to cover your ears)...

Re: "Imperial Bedroom" Last of a perfect trifecta for me!

So, it’s 1982. I’ve been an EC fan for a few years. Have loved every record, but I’m sensing something. After the Ray Charles incident, my boy has become defensive (wouldn’t you?). Get Happy is a great, rocking record, but the sudden immersion in “soul” music, coming when it does, strikes my cocky, ...

Re: She Was No Good - really is quite good

Analyzing EC’s lyrics is always a tricky proposition. He is not the most direct lyric writer: within one lyric you get sudden shifts in points of views, themes etc. I’ve always loved his lyrics for their stream of consciousness feel, and their sheer venom. So, when he writes stuff like this it’s ent...

Re: Elvis cancels shows in Israel , June/July '10

Rachel, my comments about Israel (the modern state of Israel not the ancient states of Judah/Israel) being the creation of the West, are really just referring to the literal events sorrounding the creation of the modern state, in the 20th Century. I wasn't denigrating the impact of the area's ancien...
