Re: New Gig Thread

Hot on the heels of that one, and not wanting to lose the sense of its magic, the wonderful Aimee Mann at the wonderful Union Chapel. Sold out and more atmospheric than ever. Never seen Aimee before, despite owning almost all her albums. Support was from Ted Leo, who is unknown to me, but with whom ...

That would be Mother Knows Best ... plus it has Withered and Died as covered by Elvis.

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Not from me, old chum, I was dying to love this record and when the first songs were aired and a journalist pronounced it a future classic, I was salivating. I also enjoyed hearing Brooklyn Bowl a lot ahead of the album. My objection to the insertion of those lines from Nat Ran into SOYT is not so m...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Have you read the autobiography yet? I started, but am finding it a somewhat painful read. In terms of the writing, the content? I think it's very powerful. I'm now around the time of the first Smiths album. His formative years were excellent. It's frustrating how much detail he gives to certain th...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

"Stick Out Your Tongue" I have actually come to prefer over the original "Pills & Soap." I just like it better. Wow wow wow. I'm sometimes stunned by people's taste. Famously there's no accounting for it. I will posit, though, that as you're a youngster you weren't witness t...

Re: New Gig Thread

Outstanding night with The National at the lovely Alexandra Palace last night. Along with their other great American contemporaries, Wilco and Arcade Fire, they've worked out completely how to make the power and excitement of their recordings come across in a visceral way live. They sounded magnific...

Re: My Memories of Seeing Elvis Costello Live 76 Times

Gosh, my paltry 13 or whatever seem hopeless by comparison. I do love the idea, though, of having a real fan-chat with Elvis about something like that, and him being so enthusiastic and magnanimous in response. I would love to tell him that contrary to the sleevenotes to the Rhino reissue of Trust ,...

Re: Morrissey when you least expect it

Sex and sexuality play a dominant role, and he's very good on the absurdities of it, e.g. things along the lines of 'vaginas were very prevalent in mid-70s Manchester, if not unavoidable, but where were the male genitalia?' You know, I've been feeling like a lazy sunbather ever since I posted the a...

Re: New Gig Thread

You haven't read any of his novels, have you? (Assuming he already has published some.) Spent some time last night at my weekly band rehearsal working on 16 Military Wives with my chums. Should be a fun song to play to people even if they won't have a clue what it is. Pretty immediate. Any thoughts ...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Do you find yourself returning to it and listening to it? I don't. Someone said you had to play it lots to really get it - surely too much work. Glad he did it, but mid-table at best. Only really two to three memorable things on it I'd want to listen to again in a few years time. I'd say it's pretty...

I enjoyed seeing that again with the benefit of having seen Gravity, which of course made me think of that song. I do enjoy his earnest face and delivery. Shame about the moustache.

Re: "Elvis Costello: Mystery Dance" - docu. - BBC4 Nov. 8 '1

I was livid at the omission in the "For the Stars" cover on the album sleeve montage as this was a sloppy mistake. The absence of Emmylou in the 60m version was sad but their rendition of Scarlet Tide in the 90m show was moving. His work with Sofie VO is stunning in its audacity and subli...

Re: "Elvis Costello: Mystery Dance" - docu. - BBC4 Nov. 8 '1

I haven't seen the credits, but it seems less important a point than the words EC speaks about having them as a backing band, naming them individually and speaking highly of their powers. And there's some lovely footage of them in action. Seems perfectly balanced to me. Not sure I'd heard Nieve talk...

Re: Morrissey when you least expect it

Brilliant, many thanks, just what I needed. He writes about loads of songs I barely know or not at all, and I was planning to follow some up, so this is perfect. I seem to have been far too busy/tired to read anything of late, which means I'm crawling through this book, which I would have devoured i...

Re: "Elvis Costello: Mystery Dance" - docu. - BBC4 Nov. 8 '1

A long week and a knee injury meant I was lying down and nodded off c an hour into it, but I loved what I saw. For me no surprise at all that a docu made with his extended involvement (and you almost got a sense of hanging out with Elvis from all the in-car footage) should not focus on Dublin/Cait i...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Having now got it and played it through two or three times, I heartily disagree with Petridis, the above and whoever else thinks Reflektor is a drop in form after The Suburbs . It's maybe not got as many great songs, but I love the 2CD division and find each one makes a nicely formed whole, and also...

Re: Recently viewed films

Saw Gravity in 3D Imax. Not cheap but if ever there was a film that merited it, this was it. Great depiction of isolation. I found the 'moment of decision' to be very moving. Overall a brave and clever film to make, with a quite incredible use of CGI, convincing from start to finish. Good performanc...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

I guess those points figure in terms of Crimson Red being done how it was. At the end of the day, it's the songs that rise above all else. I lover this quote from the Sondre Lerche article: "Highlights such as "Adolescence" and "Billy" inhabit a lyrical tenderness and melodi...
