Re: UNFAITHFUL MUSIC & DISAPPEARING INK - Oct. 2015

I sold my shop and am in the process of developing something else. That will take a few months. Interesting news, John, The world's first Museum of Elvis Costello? If you get as far as creating such an index (and it's good to see a few of us are pining for one), I'd be very to give it a full check ...

Re: Recently viewed films

Carol was wonderful. Brilliantly directed, filed, acted, set, and a totally engrossing story. the kind of film you see once and want to see again. Interesting that the two films I've been most impressed by this year (this & Brooklyn) are both set in the same place in the same decade. Dying to se...

Re: UNFAITHFUL MUSIC & DISAPPEARING INK - Oct. 2015

No sympathy sought, but I simply don't accept the argument that a print index isn't needed because you can search digitally in another format. They're two separate things. A publisher doesn't expect people to buy in two formats, and should service the formats they're selling to equally. In my index ...

Re: UNFAITHFUL MUSIC & DISAPPEARING INK - Oct. 2015

Not sure how a reference can be clear but not explicit? Sure, indexing is a skill, publishers hire specialised people for it, but like all editing, it's a matter of making choices and sticking by them. It doesn't bother me in the least that Costello uses American spelling and vocabulary, as long as ...

Re: UNFAITHFUL MUSIC & DISAPPEARING INK - Oct. 2015

I hope for the paperback edition they fork out enough to correct the annoyingly frequent typos in the book. It's a bugbear of mine as someone who's worked in publishing for 27 years, but why a publisher of the status of Penguin Viking can't send a book of this stature out 'clean' is beyond me. They ...

Re: Recently viewed films

Toibin is engaging with a drawl to his brogue. He is witty and enjoyable as a speaker and a good reader. His prose is incredibly clean and avoids 'effects', but the writing is very exact and psychologically always very engaging. Nora Webster, his last book, which has some connections of Enniscorthy ...

Re: Recently viewed films

Couldn't agree more. As a big fan of Colm Toibin (who I enjoyed seeing at the Cambridge Lit Festival earlier this year), I loved the novel, but this was the perfect adaptation. I thought Saoirse Ronan's performance was incredible. Apparently they wanted Rooney Mara, but great news that she wasn't fr...

Re: RIP ALLEN TOUSSAINT

Gosh what sad news. 77 seems too young in this day and age, but to be touring at that age is a great achievement and for sure it must be so demanding physically. Rather heartbreakingly, the last song he ever performed, Brickyard Blues is on this link, plus an earlier one from the set. The solo at th...

Well found, I have 0 recollection of that story or that it was me who posted it, though I recall well their love of the HORA and can hear Hepworth laughing as he reaches the punchline. Must listen to that new one.

Re: Unfaithful Music & Soundtrack album, Oct 2015

Haha, 10,000 songs! I'll remember to give that one a listen soon. Even the 692 songs is pretty extreme. I enjoyed tat Vanity Fair article, maybe representative track from each album might be more manageable. I'm struck by how much classical is on there. I suspect he wouldn't do that now.

Re: Unfaithful Music & Soundtrack album, Oct 2015

Nice one! Thanks for that. The utterly maddening thing is I searched for 'costello unfaithful music' when writing the above and zilch. Now I even tried the full EC UF&DI title and still zilch. Spotify's database search is pants. All that work you've done and no-one can come across it, 'no result...

Nice comments on the wonderful Unthanks and Flutter is a great choice from a superb album. Saw them touring it earlier this year and was very impressed, even if, sadly, they didn't play Shipbuilding.

Re: Unfaithful Music & Soundtrack album, Oct 2015

What I'd like to see is a companion Soundtrack, of tracks referenced as influences, inspirations, irreplaceable cornerstones. Preferably hand-selected by the author himself. I'm only about a quarter of the way through the book so far but would guess such a collection would include such tracks/artis...

Re: Elvis on Jonathan Ross show 31st October

Nice pic. It wasn't the issue about gloves that struck me so much as Ross handling it like astonishingly valuable Sevre porcelain, whereas Elvis handled it like a guitar. There was maybe a hint of irreverence there, but then he was about to play it, so why not? There was an amazing confluence of his...

Re: Elvis solo, London (UK), May 2016

Having just bought tickets for Wilco's only London show in ages a whole 12 months away (Brixton Academy, what a gig that will be), I was relieved to find this was more of the same and I felt no need to shell out more! I'm sure it will be nice to see him at the Palladium.

Re: Elvis on Jonathan Ross show 31st October

In an echo of the line from The Big Light, Priscilla's absurd face looks like the whole thing is going to snap up like roller blinds. I found it amazing to see all the Elvis shots with that guitar, then Costello talking about his own Elvis Fender, and then, after Ross handling it with special gloves...

Re: UNFAITHFUL MUSIC & DISAPPEARING INK - Oct. 2015

I agree with that point! I really enjoyed seeing Thompson on Later, that's a great line-up. I'm looking forward to reading the book cover to cover on holiday, but I was aghast at the lack of an index. I think Penguin should have added a few more pages with one. For a book of this length with thus mu...

Re: EC fan victim of London Bombing, July '05

They interviewed the sister and talked about their going to the EC concert on the BBC news this evening.

Re the Cornbury ref, I recall he said a few words about her as well as playing the song, but I can't recall what. I just remain it made for a very emotional moment in the show.
