Re: Sometimes I Forget That Not Everyone Is An Elvis Fan

I was at the Monday Beacon show, and I was a little disappointed, and it had something to do with what this guy is getting at. It was a great show, and I had a great time, and my sense that something was off is really as I think about it all about how I as a long time fan, and long time EC concert g...

Re: Straining to outlive the past re:WIWC

Been away for a while, so late to the WIWC party. This is my least liked EC record by a mile. I dislike this record intensely, mostly for irrational reasons. Here goes. I was bothered by everything that surrounded the release of the record. First, it was the EC pr message: we were getting a rowdy ro...

Re: "This isn't confession. This is pop music" re:Brutal You

Thanks for the advice, Christopher. I passed out for a while, and apparently fell off the flamingo chair. We have our paraphernelia (as EC would say) here in Weston. Remember, Keif is a neighbor. Back to BY, what the heck do you mean by ending your post with the totemic album reference? Emblematic o...

Re: "This isn't confession. This is pop music" re:Brutal You

PD, like you, I don’t “love” this record. I like it a lot though, and in the post-KOA period I like it more than any other EC record except PFM and NR. Right up there with Momo, too. The weaker moments that you spotlight don’t really kick in with me as they do with you. I’m going to channel your ear...

Re: "This isn't confession. This is pop music" re:Brutal You

I really like BY. Loved the return to that combo sound from the early records, coming as it did after Spike and MLAR. Lovely melodies. Many of the songs are nostalgic, if not downright playful. London’s Brilliant, Science Fiction, Clown Strike, 13 steps, Rocking Horse and Glad are my particular favo...

Re: In praise of Momofuku

Interesting post, PD. What happens every now and then on this Forum has a lot to do with quite a few things you focus on. You have a clash between folks who, to use your very good description, just express their sheer arbitrary opinion. "You don't like X, well I like X, in fact I think X is gre...

Re: "In time we can turn these obsessions into careers"MLAR2

Taramasalata, I'm in the camp that kind of likes MLAR. So i'm not here to bash MLAR (although there's nothing wrong with that), but to praise GH. So, I'm going to take up your challenge and comment on why I do not question GH for cointaining rightfully forgotten songs like "5 gears in reverse&q...

Re: In praise of Momofuku

Momofuku time. But first, Rope, I’m telling you man, you should give up cable TV, drink and marijuana and do some serious writing. Not that you can’t write while high, or drunk or doing TV work, but I’m a conservative kind of guy and assume it would be harder. That summary of your troubles is pricel...

Re: "In time we can turn these obsessions into careers"MLAR2

I like Georgie too, CWR. Who cares what EC thinks? Back in the mid 80s, everytime he released a record he would do an extensive interview with Musician magazine. It was the same drill: upon album release he would go on and on about the new record, the new songs, and then disparage the preceeding rec...

Christopher, I found your post on PFM, but I can't seem to be able to revive it from my computer, so I will give you my take on that record here, with apologies to those talking about MLAR. Just look away. I love this record. As I go back on this old thread it’s nice to see some very nice lines from...

Re: "In time we can turn these obsessions into careers"MLAR2

christopher, you are right about PLU. That's another album closer fitting the same optimistic theme. He gets tagged with the wildly eclectic label, and the whole misanthropic thing, but in the end he chooses, again and again, to go with the conservative, almost old-fashioned approach ending the reco...

Re: "In time we can turn these obsessions into careers"MLAR2

Now, Christopher, this is way too harsh. I don't think this is EC's finest hour, but Summer, Doomsday, Bugs and All Grown Up are not only listenable, but terrific EC songs. Forget the bile in the lyrics. It's EC after all, to paraphrase Ronboy. If you don't appreciate artful insults then missing a c...

Re: Elvis plays Singapore, March 7 2011

It's amazing that the EC site would post this particular interview, unless the idea is to laugh at the whole thing. Maybe there was a language barrier at work here, but this interviewer is right at the top of the list of inane interviewers that EC has been confronted with. Elvis "gratifies"...

Re: The Return Of The Imposter: National Ransom No.2

Doc, that alleged Thomas post, if legit, is certainly a sign that EC could also be lurking. But I doubt that EC is aping his former buddy. EC strikes me as the kind of artist who would consider that kind of thing to be beneath him, somehow. He's all about the music, you know. Just puts the stuff out...

Re: The Return Of The Imposter: National Ransom No.2

cwr, been away from the Board for a while, so I'm coming late to the NR and NR2 discussion. Don't much like NR2. Does strike me as too Tom Waitsish for it to be taken seriously. I'm sorry to say that I'm firmly in the anti-NR1 camp. It is the only song on NR that makes me cringe. Don't see a melody ...

Re: Elvis Costello retires from making albums....

I would say it differently, Jeremy: Dylan can get away with it and never has to explain himself, not because he has a mystique that has always been a part of what made Dylan Dylan. Bobby Z, unlike the EC we all love, is an unknowable mysterious genius, mistique or no mistique. You can call him anyth...

Re: "Goodbye Cruel World" Redux

Not a fan of this record. Always associate it with the end of the first, golden era. After this came the Beard, T-Bone, Americana; Elvis' Band was in; our Elvis' band was out. Then came the half-hearted reunion, Esperanto style for BAC. Those two record were great, but very different from the early ...
